Sonys PlayStation 5 is the most exciting yet boring next-gen console so far

19.04.2019 13:33

Nintendos latest system is a console/portable hybrid, and Googles first serious entry into the world of video games is a streaming service. Microsoft has recently called Googles streaming news a validation of Microsofts own strategy, and the company described Xbox as a platform that could work across multiple devices, including your cell phone, at last years E3. While we still have plenty of questions about each strategy except for the Switch, which is a relatively known quantity these days its worth looking at the details that each company first chooses to share about their next-generation plans. Nintendo wanted you to play the Switch everywhere, Google doesnt care about selling you hardware, and Microsoft is betting on a subscription model that can be used across multiple devices. Each of these approaches is a drastic shift from what came before. Now we have Sony sharing details of the PlayStation 5, the as-yet-unnamed sequel to the PlayStation 4. And based on...

Cuphead

19.04.2019 12:00

This brawl is surely brewing. The praise that you’re playing a living cartoon has been bandied about before but Cuphead, a labour of love inspired by Fleischer Studios’ 1930s cartoons like Popeye and Betty Boop, is the real deal. It also marks the first of potentially many former Xbox exclusives making their way to the Switch, and this gorgeously hand-drawn cartoon world seems perfectly suited to the Nintendo family. However, if you’re coming at this weaned on the chilled platforming of Yoshi and Kirby, well I’ve got news for you. For starters, tobacco, alcohol and gambling references (perhaps a sly nod to pre-Hays Code cartoons in the US) makes the world of Cuphead more adult than it appears. Secondly, it’s tough as hell. At its core, Cuphead is an old-school hardcore platform shooter about memorising increasily demanding attack patterns from a rogue’s gallery of bosses with multiple phases, which while a feast for the eyes also serves to raise your anxiety of how to navigate the fresh projectile hell coming your way. One of the key mechanics to aid you is the ‘Parry Slap’, which when you hit jump at the right time lets you parry pink projectiles, granting you […]

OlliOlli: Switch Stance

19.04.2019 11:00

Hooray for Olliwood! Think skateboarding games and most people who remember will tell you their fond memories of playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater back in the day, or more likely they’ll tell you that the second game was the absolute pinnacle. While it sadly looks less and less likely we’ll ever get those good times back or a proper skating sim, in recent years developer Roll7 have created the best indie skating alternative with OlliOlli and its sequel OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood. This excellent package bundles the two games together for Switch, with the sequel arriving on a Nintendo platform for the first time. In general, both games follow the same structure. This isn’t a 3D skate park where you can freestyle all you like, but rather your skater has to navigate a series of tricky obstacle courses on a 2D plane. They’re all levels with a beginning and end, but it’s up to you how well you do to get there. The controls are relatively simple but there’s an enormous depth in mastering timing and precision if you want to do well as the slightest crash or halting or momentum will mean starting all over. Your skater already […]
